VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Benedict has granted a series of interviews to a German journalist who will publish it late this year as a book in German and Italian editions, the Vatican announced on Tuesday.
Peter Seewald, who published two interview books with the German-born pontiff before he was elected to head the Roman Catholic Church in 2005, conducted the interviews in late July at the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, it said.
“The book will be published quite soon (before the end of this year) in Italian and German, and if possible also in other languages,” spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said in a statement. The interviews were conducted in German.
Seewald’s previous books with Benedict — Salt of the Earth (1996) and God and the World (2000) — were bestsellers in several languages. The then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was outspoken about the state of the church.
“He didn’t want to look at any of the questions beforehand, nor did he request that anything be admitted or added,” Seewald, a Bavarian like the pope, wrote in the introduction to Salt of the Earth.
According to the Italian daily Il Giornale, the working title of the new book is Light of the World.
