Cultural evening at Tarxien
The Ghaqda Poeti Maltin and the Tarxien local council recently organised a cultural evening at Id-Dar tal-Kejka, Tarxien. Dr Joseph Axiaq, the Ghaqda’s assistant secretary, compered the evening. Poems in Maltese and in English were read while Patrick Sammut, vice-president, interviewed Peter A. Caruana about the importance he gives to his birthplace in his writings. Mr Caruana who hails from Tarxien, is a writer and poet and is also an honorary member of the Gh.P.M.
Guitarist and prolific folk singer Walter Micallef enlightened the evening with five popular songs, while mezzo soprano Miriam Camilleri sang Schubert’s Ave Maria.
Two short speeches were delivered. Alfred Massa (pictured) president of the Gh.P.M. referred to various literary personalities who hailed from Tarxien and who contributed to the enhancement of Maltese literature. He also mentioned others who spent some years living in this Neolithic village like Dr Ninu Cremona, E. B. Vella and Guze’ Cassar Pullicino.
The mayor Chev. Paul Farrugia also distributed certificates to a number of locals who had participated in a traditional crafts courses organized by the Tarxien Council and thanked all those present for answering favourably to the Council’s invitation. Chev. Farrugia promised that his Council is determined to continue working hard to promote culture among the villagers.
