The 56 libraries run by local councils loaned out half a million books in 2009, Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said.
It was announced on Wednesday that the Parliamentary Secretariat responsible for councils would give financial assistance to 45 councils to invest in more books.
In 2009, a total of €230,000 was allocated for the procurement of library books, double the budget of the previous year. The 2010 budget will double yet again with half the additional amount to be spent on books published in Malta.
Council libraries are now open for an average of 8 hours a week, compared to the original 4 hours a week.
