Delving into our past
A window on life in Malta going back hundreds of years will soon be opened on the internet, through documents being posted there from the Maltese Notarial Archives.
The plan is part of a pilot project announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Small Businesses and Lands, Jason Azzopardi, in which some of the oldest documents in the notarial archives will be digitalised. Collaborating in the work will be the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library of St John’s University, of the US.
Notarial documents going back to the 16th century will be digitally photographed and put at the disposal of researchers throughout the world by being posted on the internet.
The work will start with the preservation of volumes from the 16th century, which will take some weeks. Also helping will be students from the University of Malta’s librarian and archivists’ course. After analysing the results, the intention is to continue with the process on all archives.
The Notarial Archives will be retaining copyright on the documents.
