Faber has bought a new title from comedian Stewart Lee, whose novel The Perfect Fool was published by Fourth Estate. Faber editor Hannah Griffiths bought How I Escaped my Certain Fate: The Life and Deaths of a Stand-up Comedian from agent Debi Allen for an undisclosed sum.
The title will tell the story behind Lee’s stand-up shows Stand-Up Comedian (2004), 90s Comedian (2005), which followed him writing “Jerry Springer: The Musical” and 41st Best Stand-up Comedian (2007) along with notes and commentaries on the material and techniques he uses in his comedy show. The title will not be a memoir, but will include personal material as the source for his shows.
Griffiths said, “We are very proud to bring Stewart Lee to Faber, in many ways the perfect home for him. . . He is the most exciting, provocative comedian on the circuit and this book is a perfect reflection of his particular talent. It will be a great antidote to the Christmas celeb-fest.”
The title will be published in August 2010, when Lee’s new show opens at the Edinburgh Fringe. Lee will also appear at the National Theatre on 6th April as part of his current If You Prefer a Milder Comedian Please Ask for One tour.
